Library News

A New Website

Now that the Livingston Manor and Roscoe Libraries have merged, it is time that the websites follow suit. You can now keep up to date with everything that is offered by both branches of the Livingston Manor-Roscoe Library all on one website! You will have access to all of the same resources, catalog materials, events, and more, but all from one spot on the web. If you happen to navigate to one of the old web addresses, you will simply be directed to our new URL:

The library’s free notary service (Livingston Manor Branch) is now available by appointment. Starting on September 9th, this service will also be available every Tuesday from 10:00am-2:00pm.

Book Repair 101

Cara Schlesinger, of Faenwyl Bindery, is a bench-trained bookbinder and book conservator. She has spent years as a caretaker of rare, valuable, and beloved books with the key goal of preserving their integrity and longevity as treasured objects. Cara has provided conservation services and/or custom boxes to places such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Thomas J. Watson Library and Columbia University Libraries.

Join professional book conservator Cara Schlesinger and learn about book conservation:

  • what is possible to preserve

  • best practices for caring for hardcover books, new and old

  • demonstration of simple fixes that can be done at home, for weak bindings, pages that have fallen out, and more

  • demonstration of how to make starch paste used for book binding and paper conservation

Dundas Castle

Join Town of Rockland Historian Joyce Conroy for a presentation on Dundas Castle, located in Roscoe NY.

Designed in the Gothic Revival and Elizabethan Revival styles, the 36-room opulent residence was constructed by Ralph Wurts-Dundas between 1910 and 1924, but never completed or occupied by Dundas or his wife Josephine because he died in 1921.

Perennials Multiply,
We Must Divide

Join educator in sustainable permaculture Maria Grimaldi and learn about perennials. Unlike annual plants, which die at the end of their growing season, perennials come back year after year, going dormant in the winter and returning in the spring and summer. Importantly, perennials are also capable of multiplying on their own by self-seeding. Maria will discuss how you can prevent overcrowding and promote healthier growth to rejuvenate perennials where you live. Learn how and when to divide your perennials and other permaculture practices from an experienced organic farmer.

with Gael Roots Community Farm

September explodes with wild (and cultivated) natural dye plants on our fields and woodlands providing a precious brief window for gathering these gifts from nature from which we can extract color using simple traditional techniques.

Learn the basics with mother and daughter team Amy and Iris Gillingham of Gael Roots and Wild Roots Farms as they demonstrate how the magic happens.

D.I.Y. Energy Savings
Session

Pizza Provided!

Join Energy Advisor Steve Bonds-Liptay from Cornell Cooperative Extension and learn how to take simple D.I.Y., "do-it-yourself", actions to reduce energy waste and save money on your utility bills. Steve will also discuss heat pumps, insulation, incentives for home energy upgrades, EmPower+, and HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program). Those who register will receive a free energy kit, which includes 2 LED light bulbs, weatherstripping, door sweep, power strip, window insulation, foam tape for windows/doors, and foam outlet and switch gaskets. There will also be free pizza and beverages!

Manor Ink

Manor Ink is seeking student reporters! Working with our local award-winning youth-led newspaper is not only a great way for students to spend their summer hours, but it offers a unique and invaluable experience for aspiring writers, photographers, journalists, and the like.

Teens ages 12 to 17 are invited to engage with the community, share their voice, and earn financial rewards for their writing and art along the way. Manor Ink meets every Wednesday at 3:00pm. Adult mentors are encouraged to join as well.
